Hospital Station

1963

Sector General is the largest structure ever built by the Federation. So huge that no single world could handle the construction so each planet contributed its own section. All to be assembled in situ. Despite accurate plans there are always errors in translating dimensions so there were plenty of modifications to be made by the construction crews.

When an accident leaves a Hudlar infant orphaned O'Mara is literally left holding the baby. And the blame! This is not O'Mara the Chief Psychologist of the hospital, but an O'Mara who is a rather bored construction worker. Who is left to work out alien healthcare from first principles!

Dr Conway was not always the well known Senior Physician. Once upon a time he was a raw house officer who knew nothing of the reasons behind the Monitor Corps until a panicking pet threatens the hospital and forces him to face some unpalatable facts.

As he becomes more integrated into the hospital Dr Conway is drawn into the long range plans of a newly discovered race who have decided to save a whole species from a dry death. But how could an earth dog teach anyone anything about a multi tonne brontosaur?

When the unthinkable happens and a relative is allowed to visit, the hospital is thrown into chaos when it panics as a whole load of monsters stampede towards it. For the visitor is the youngest born of the hospital's latest star patient, one of a species that are almost perfect shape shifters.so the hospital has to be very careful in counting the patients Dr Conway, escorting the newly arrived Dr Prilicla on it's orientation tour is caught up in the excitement.

Finally, Dr Conway is faced with the remnants of an alien starship. One that held a patient. After a confusing time analysing gases they realise that it must have been an ambulance ship. An impression given further credence by the cancerous growths that were beginning to coat the alien's body. To the horror of his superiors, Conway refuses anything to alleviate the patient's condition even as it finally coats the alien and it stops breathing!
