Having escaped Mesa once, Anton Zilwicki and Victor Cachat are forced to the conclusion that the Mesan defector, while brilliant enough in his own areas of knowledge knew nothing of the Mesan Alignment or it's inner membership. And the new alliance between Manticore and Haven would be going to Mesa at some point to, um, thank them for the meddling in their governments but they knew little of the slaves or seccies that made up the vast majority of the population.

A fair bit of the opening chapters of the book is reasonably funny but the scenes on Mesa are suitably grim and messy though at times the authors (Weber with Eric Flint) appeared to rely too much on authorial fiat.
