Time and Again

Jack Finney

1970

This is listed as a Fantasy Masterworks novel even though it's hero is a man from the present who finds a way to travel from the present (1970) to the past (1882). The excuse that the editors could invoke is that the method of time travel invoked in this story is purely psychological - there are no great engines sending him spinning through time, just his complete and utter conviction that when he goes out that he is in 1882.

Once back in the past, he makes his way into Society and finds true love. Knowing his time is short and coming to dislike his superiors, a shadowy arm of the US Government, Our Hero persuades his True Love to return to his present.

Is everything going to work out OK for the couple though? The girl is suffering from a case of really severe culture shock and Our Hero is forced to re-evaluate his own atitudes to his own time. After all he was selected for this mission party because he had no connection to his own time.

This is a Fantasy Masterworks novel.
