This is a sphere of matter that has completely enclosed a star and thus is a member of the Big Dumb Object class of objects. The internal surface area of the sphere can take advantage of the whole energy output of the enclosed star and there is, of course, a massive surface area to explore. Due to their massive size, they are considered the result of a highly technical civilisation, which may or may not still exist. In most stories, a Dyson Sphere is just a BDO, to be used as an effecively inexhaustible area to explore.
