Empire of Death

David Bishop

2004

The Prince Consort had been dead for several years now, but Queen Victoria remained inconsolable and refused to oversee the governance of her Nation. But now a new Clairvoyant had been introduced to the grieving Queen. As well as persuading the Queen his powers were genuine, the young medium told her that there was a place where the Land of the Dead touched the Land of the Living. If she wanted to see her beloved Albert once more, all she had to do was visit the upper reaches of the Clyde and pass through the open rift that could be found there.

But even a Queen as desolated as Victoria was not completely lost to good sense and a platoon of soldiers occupied the location to make sure that no one would witness the potential reunion. Also present was an expert in the newly developed art of diving. In an area that the locals called haunted, the army set up its camp and fell into their usual patterns. It did not take long though for things to start going wrong; the lieutenant in charge of the detachment soon turned up dead, his hair ghost white!

Before the Queen was allowed to make her visit, her courtiers sent up a Special Investigation Team consisting of the Queen's military advisor and a pair of newcomers; the mysterious Doctor John Smith and his assistant Nyssa of Traken. Having recently lost their travelling companions Adric and Tegan, the pair have been assailed by something purporting to be the ghost of Adric. But neither are superstitious Terrans and believed their vision had a more, uh, mundane explanation but up in Scotland their scepticism is sorely tested as they investigated the breach between two realities.
