The 4th Doctor The Doctor

Background

The Doctor's fourth incarnation had the most onscreen time of the lot. Though forced to undertake a number of missions for the Time Lords, the Doctor is largely a free agent, travelling through Space and Time as his will and the TARDIS determine.

Season 12

In The Giant Robot the Doctor and Sarah Jane are joined by Harry Sullivan. All sorts of technological wonders are being stolen and the Doctor and UNIT are faced by another doomsday superiority cult.
Unfortunately, this is best remembered these days for the awful chromakey effects and the incredibly stupid decision to use an action man tank against the robot. To be fair, the chromakey technique was fairly new in TV at the time but no way should that tank be forgiven!

In The Ark in Space the Doctor takes Sarah Jane and Harry on a trip in the TARDIS. He's slightly off on his co-ordinates and the trio find themselves in the far future aboard a space station. They find that the remnants of humanity had been put in deep freeze to await a time when the devastated planet would be able to support them once more. This episode provides the Doctor with one of the most powerful lines in his on-screen incarnations as he muses on the indominable human spirit.

In The Sontaran Expriment, the Doctor and his companions transmatted down to Earth. Once there, they find that they aren't the only ones to be visiting the supposedly deserted planet. A Sontaran scout has captured a human scouting mission and is seeing how well they could stand up to pressure.

On their way back to the ark in space, the Doctor and his companions are intercepted by the Time Lords and find themselves in on The Genesis of the Daleks. The Doctor and his companions are tasked with stopping the development of the Daleks right back at their origins... The Kaleds and Thals had been fighting so long that their forces had degenerated from molecular dispersion weapons all the way down to stone tipped spears, but Davros, the chief Kaled scientist, had some thoughts on how he could tip the balance...

Revenge of the Cybermen. Using the Time Ring to get back to the Nerva Ark to retrieve the TARDIS, the Doctor, Sarah-Jane and Harry find themselves aboard the space station many thousands of years before it was used as an ark along with a load of dead bodies. They find themselves shut away from half of the station and in an attempt to find the TARDIS they break through the locked blast door but are they going to release a plague on the survivors? And who would want to kill off the crew of a station warning ships away from a dead asteroid?

Season 13

Terror of the Zygons. The Doctor and Sarah Jane are in the Highlands where they find shape-changing aliens and an answer to what lies in Loch Ness!

In Planet of Evil, the Doctor and Sarah Jane find themselves in the far future and at the boundaries of two universes. They have to persuade the scientist Sorensen that his plans to use the anti matter crystals would not lead to the universal happiness he hoped for.

In Pyramids of Mars an ancient evil is awakened in the English countryside when some Egyptian remains are uncovered. Can the Doctor and Sarah Jane stop the destruction of the planet? The Doctor shows Sarah Jane what the consequences of not taking any action would be thereby bringing to a final end any pretence that the Doctor's involvement can't change history.

The Android Invasion.

The Brain of Morbius. On the planet of Karn, there is the Sisterhood, who study the powers of the mind and keep themselves alive with the sacred elixier of the Flame. Then, in an abandoned power plant, there's the mysterious Solon, neurosurgeon of great renown and his hulking brute of a servant. Neither party likes each other but as the Sisterhood force starships attempting to land on Karn to crash, so Solon and his servant salvage the dead in order to rebuild a body for Morbius, a great one of the Time Lords, supposedly executed many years before. All Solon lacks is a suitable head, and into this comes the Doctor and Sarah Jane. Solon knows he's found his missing piece even if it's still, however temporarily, attached to the Doctor...

The Seeds of Doom sees the Doctor and Sarah Jane taking a trip to Antartica where they are introduced to a seed pod that had been hidden in the ice sheets for millennia and had travelled quite a distance. The plants that grew from these pods were definitely antagonistic and threatened to lead the plantlife of Earth in a rebellion against animal-kind.
Another story depending on chromakey effects, this was much more effective, and the BBC's model department excelled in the creation of the explosive effects as the overgrown bush was trimmed back to size.

Season 14

In The Masque of Mandragora, we are whisked away to Rennaiscence Italy. An ancient interstellar energy field attempts to destroy this rebirth of knowledge.

In The Hand of Fear Sarah Jane and the Doctor are caught in a quarrying accident. Sarah Jane finds a spare hand that's not very helpful. She finds she's had enough of travelling with the Doctor, especially when he's not willing to take her with him when he's recalled to Gallifrey.

The Deadly Assassin. The Doctor is recalled to Gallifrey where he's about to be framed for murder.

The Face of Evil. The Doctor finds that a previous involvement with a crashed Terran spaceship has led to a strange society developing. He collects a new companion

The Robots of Death. Aboard a vast Sand Miner in the middle of an unknown desert on an unknown planet, the Doctor and Leela find danger in the form of the supposedly safe robots.

The Talons of Weng-Chiang. In the late eighteen hundreds, the Doctor and Leela have a terrifying encounter with something pretending to be an ancient Chinese God.

Season 15

Horror of Fang Rock. Caught in the mists, a party of travellers find they're sharing their refuge with another crash victim. Though this one's come from further afield than France!

The Invisible Enemy. The Doctor and Leela have to fight off a virus that has ideas above its station. They're joined by K9, a robotic dog.

Image of the Fendahl. An ancient evil is reborn in the English countryside.

The Sun Makers. With the resources of Earth and the inner planets exhausted, the remnants of humanity have been exiled to Pluto where they are taxed on almost all aspects of their life by the Company. Can rebellion be far off?

Underworld. The Doctor and his Companions run across the remnants of the Time Lord's greatest mistake, and they aren't happy...

The Invasion of Time. The unthinkable - Gallifrey itself was under attack and with a little help from the Doctor, it might even fall! Leela falls for a member of the Capitol Guard. Must have been the uniform.
This is rather impressive, particularly if you run it with the new CGI effects. I didn't really think Tom Baker played the Doctor very convincingly as a villain (though Tom Baker can play convincing villains) and the Vardans were really rather naff once they'd given up their energy being disguises. Andred, Romana's squeeze, was reasonable as the commander of the Guards and the Castellan was wonderfully slimy :-).

Season 16

The Ribos Operation. The Doctor is joined by the Lady Romana when both are told to look for the Key to Time. The Doctor's in a race against a couple of confidence tricksters to get hold of the first part. Again, we are treated to a verbal duet of quiet intensity as a pair of lowlifes hangout together, hiding from the local guards.

The Pirate Planet. This segment of the key is the remnant of a planet after it had been broken up, but the Doctor finds the Pirate Panet's next target to be one of his favourite planets. One of my favourite bits from this story is the running gunfight between the Pirate Captain's robotic parrot and K9.

The Stones of Blood. The third segment of the key is located in the Nine Travellers on Boscombe Moor. Unfortunately some of the stones are alien killing machines...

The Androids of Tara. The fourth segment is a piece of statuary while Romana meets a twin.

The Power of Kroll. The fifth bit of the key has changed some of the local wildlife to horrific proportions

The Armageddon Factor. The final segment of the key turns out to be a princess. If the Doctor used the key, she would die.

Season 17

Destiny of the Daleks. The Daleks are looking for Davros on the now deserted planet of Skaro. The mysterious Movellians are hoping to get there first. The human slaves are just looking for rescue. Romana decides to travel with the Doctor but, like all good Time Ladies, she requires a change of costume and body.

City of Death. The Doctor and Romana travel to Paris and discover a long laid plan.

The Creature from the Pit. The Doctor and Romana find themselves on the planet of Chloris where there's a lot of greenery but little metal. An ambassador from a planet where there's a lot of metal and not so much greenery finds that trade is not very welcome. Especially when the person you're trying to talk to has the only metal mine on the planet!

Nightmare of Eden. The Doctor Who team's take on the ethics of drugs running.

The Horns of Nimon. The Nimon had promised the Skolians new warships to replace their ancient wrecks in exchange for an annual tribute from its subject planet. But is the Nimon really just one of a kind?

Shada. (Not Broadcast).

[The Dimensions in Time]. (Children in Need Special 1993)

Season 18

The Leisure Hive. The pleasure hives on Argolis are in trouble as newer attractions take the eye of the fickle galactic punters. But the new leader of the Argolians couldn't care; all he's after is revenge on the Foamsi who had rendered his planet sterile.

Meglos.

Full Circle. The Doctor and Romana find themselves outside normal space and with a new companion.

State of Decay. The Doctor and his Companions find themselves on a planet that holds an ancient secret from the Time Lords' past.

Warrior's Gate. On the borders between Normal Space and E Space lies a prison and Romana reckons she'd rather stay here than return to boring Gallifrey.

The Keeper of Traken. The Keeper of Traken is about to be replaced but the new Keeper's wife was not enamoured of the idea. Nor was his daughter. When the Master intervenes, disaster is only moments away.

Logopolis. The Doctor runs foul of the Master's latest attempt to gain power over the universe. In his attempt to save the universe from the Master the Doctor is so badly injured that he's forced into regenerating. Nyssa joins the TARDIS crew.

[K9 and Company]. This early attempt at a spin off series sees Sarah Jane and K9 investigating a case of witchcraft in the English countryside.

Season 20

The Five Doctors. The Fourth incarnation found himself caught up in an attempt to kidnap the first five incarnations. The attempt on the Fourth Doctor was partly blocked leaving him locked in the Vortex.
The Doctor is with Romana when he is caught up but she is not with him in the Vortex.

My thoughts on the character:

This Doctor, to say the least, is an eccentric. He hides a formidable intellinge behind a mask of congenial lunacy. Even at his most serious, he would go off at a tangent not always warrented by the evidence. It has to be said that the Doctor wrings every moment of experience out of his many adventures.

The actor:

Tom Baker had taken a number of small roles in television and on the stage before playing the role of Rasputin in the movie 'Nicholas and Alexandra' and the baddy, Prince Koura, in 'The Golden Voyage of Sinbad'.
When the part of Doctor Who came up, Baker was working on a building site. After leaving Who, Baker has been involved in fan activities. It has taken a while to overcome the effects of Who - Baker played the Time Lord for almost a quarter of the series' existence - a third of it's first run. However, in recent years, he has returned to the small screen in such roles as the eccentric uncle in 'Monarch of the Glen' and Wyvern in the revived 'Randel and Hopkirk, (deceased)'.
