H G Wells

(Born 1866, died 1946)

Herbert George Wells' first job was as a draper but he soon got himself a position as a teacher/pupil at Midhurst Grammar School. After that he obtained a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London where he studied biology under TH Huxley, an outspoken scientific humanist who left a deep impression on the young Wells. Wells resumed teaching and took an external degree. He dabbled in scientific journalism and began selling articles and short stories on a regular basis in 1893.

Wells is one of the earliest writers of Science Fiction, though he called them Scientific Romances. As well as these SF works he wrote a number of non-SF works, some of which were humorous in nature. In particular there is Kipps which takes its storyline from his early life in the drapers shop.
