Olaf Stapledon

(Born 1886, died 1950)

The Olaf should not be considered as any indications of 'foreignness' relating to Stapledon's background - just a streak of romanticism in his parents as he was being born: they were reading a history of the Norwegian kings. Although a pacifist, he served with distinction in the Friends' Ambulance Unit during WW1 - this only re-enforcing his beliefs. This also served as material for his novel Last Men in London.

Star Makerr and 'Last And First Men' are his best known books and both have a similar depth of scope, though Star Maker deals with the Galaxy as a whole whilst Last and First Men deals with the whole sweep of Human history.
