James Schmitz was born in 1911 in Germany of American parents and he served with the USAF during WW2.
The Witches of Karres is fairly typical of his works in that it has a group of people who have psi powers, but is set outside the general background of the majority of his stories - the worlds of the Federation of the Hub though there are similarities in the way in which psychic powers are used.
