Walter M Miller Jr

(Born 1923, died 1996)

Rather surprisingly, Miller only published one novel - A Canticle for Leibowitz - and it is for this he is best remembered these days. However, he was primarily a prolific writer of short stories.

Miller was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida and was eductaed at the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas. During WW2 he was a radioman and tailgunner, flying bombing missions over Italy.

Despite being a convert to Catholicism, Miller took his own life when he shot himself after a struggle with depression that saw him become increasingly isolated from family and friends.
