The Robots of Dawn

1983

After a gap of many years, during which his career has prospered due to off-world patronage, Lije Bailey is reminded of the price once more when a 'murder' on the planet of Aurora shocked the usually stagnant Spacer worlds. This time the chief suspect is Fastolfe himself who was also the chief proponent of Earthers becoming settlers in the outer galaxy. His opponents want to colonise too, but by using humaniform robots to provide new worlds for the Spacers, which Fastolfe felt would merely replicate the problems of current Spacer civilisation.

Okay, so the murder victim was a robot, but it was a special robot - a humaniform robot just like R Daneel Olivaw. These robots were supposed to be used by the Spacers to create new worlds where they can move into without risking anything on the move. Fastolfe's faction say this would just provide clones of the current Spacer planets with all the same problems and Falstolfe, as the holder of the rights to humaniforms refuses to let them be used in this fashion so his opponents hope to use this destruction to damage Falstoffe's political position.

Will they succeed? Or is can Lije and Daneel find a way out for Falstoffe?
