Having successfully concluded the case in The Caves of Steel Lije Bailey looked forward to an honourable promotion and an easy future, maybe looking at the prospect of colonisation, now beginning to be a reasonable thought to some Earthers.

On the far side of Spacer space, on the planet of Solaria, a murder is committed but no one can say who killed the man. Solaria has taken robotisation to an extreme even by Spacer standards, with many thousands of robots to a single person who also owned many thousands of square miles of land. The Spacers have no facility to investigate murders, so remembering Lije's abilities, they call him in along with his old partner R. Daneel Olivaw.
