Foundation and Earth

1986

Councilor Trevise is still in exile from the Foundation and after making his decision to go for the Gaia solution, he feels he needs to get more information as to why he made that decision.

The first thing he needs to do is to find the location of Earth - the mythical home planet of humanity. In order to do this, his colleague searches through the data records and finds an area of space that does not exist on the maps that their ship carries. In searching through this area, Trevise and his ship come upon a world full of mechanical beings and apparently no humans. When they are taken prisoner, they find that the humans have mutated themselves into strange beings that control their mechanical slaves mentally.

When the crew of the ship are forced to kill the estate owner in order to escape, they find the heir to the estate will also be killed so out of a sense of sympathy, they take the youngster with them on the next stage of their journey. While Trevise is convinced this is a fatal mistake, his passengers insists it is the only course of action they could have undertaken.

At the end of the book, they are finally allowed to find who's really in charge of the galaxy!
