When Mankind reached the stars they found them occupied by many other older races. Determined to hold onto a power that is waning, the High Council of Central Control has deemed that Humanity is good only for mercenaries. So the men were trained to become fighters either with old fashioned swords and guns or with near Galactic technology.

When it was time for Kana Karr to make his way amongst the stars, he was fully expecting to die on a planet far from the green hills of Earth but what he hadn't expected was treachery. Treachery from Central Control, not so surprising perhaps, and treachery from within the Terran Mercenary units themselves that shattered his faith in the whole way of his life!

Escaping from the death trap laid out for his unit on the planet of Fronn, Karr returns to Earth to find out the answers to his queries. And some are wilder than he had drempt.
